Once we completed our research tasks and returned from the desert, we had several days in Aktau, Kazakhstan while we awaited our flight to arrive to bring us home. Aktau is a city of about 200,000 people on the eastern shore of the Caspian sea. They have been spending time over the past five years developing their boardwalk along the shore. It is a rough shoreline of limestone and is a remnant of the tethys sea. There are petroglyphs along the shore line that date back to 8 AD, with pictures of animals and gods, from the Turkmen traders that would carry their goods from China along the silk road, then south through what is now Iran and Turkey, into Ani, and then west into Greece and ultimately Europe. But here in Aktau, you can see the ancient limestone as carved by the wind and water, into honeycombs that you can walk around, in and through.

This is one of the most historical, and beautiful, pictures you have ever posted. I certainly love seeing photo's like this.
